It's focus was on the history of science fiction fandom and fanzines and was highly popular for its entire run. It won the Hugo Award for Best Fanzine six times and was nominated fourteen years in a row.

These included Forrest J Ackerman (Voice of the Imagi-Nation), Ron Bennett (Skyrack), John Berry, Vincent Clarke, Sharon N. Farber, Mike Glicksohn (Energumen), Dave Kyle, Dave Langford (Ansible), Mike Resnick, Julius Schwartz (The Time Traveller), Bob Shaw, Bob Tucker (Le Zombie), Shelby Vick (Confusion), Harry Warner, Jr. (Horizons), Walt Willis (Slant, Peace On Sol III), and Ted White.
Mimosa also featured a great deal of fan art, including covers by Hugo Award for Best Fan Artist winners including Joe Mayhew, Brad W. Foster, Teddy Harvia, and Ian Gunn.
Issues 1-16 were produced via mimeograph, while issues 17-30 were printed commercially. Issues 28 and 29 were a two-volume "Mimosa Fanthology" collection, which featured some of the best articles from the first 27 issues.
