In the 1980's and 1990's Nichols was a member of the band The Canannes, an influential lo-fi independent group who released recordings on K Records and John Porcellino's labels. he has also been in the bands Huon and Driving Past, and appeared on a single by The Go Team, a band from Olympia, Washington, helmed by Calvin Johnson and Tobi Vail.
