Soapbox zine library
Soapbox Zine Library is a zine library in Philadelphia, Pa. As a part of the Philadelphia Independent Publishing Center, it collects a wide variety of zines and artists books. Soapbox is home to roughly 2,000 zines, artist books, and other handmade publications, alongside a studio for printmaking, book and zine making, and papermaking.
History
The Soapbox Zine Library was started by Mary Tasillo and Charlene Kwon. In 2010 a house was purchased in the neighborhood of West Philadelphia to house the zine library and community print shop.
The official opening reception for Soapbox was held on March 26, 2011. As part of the festivities, there were readings by Caroline Garcia Ziegler (okay hooray), Theresa Antoff, Laura Beyer, Bonnie MacAllister (Certain Circuits), Johanna Marshall (of "Mary is Reckless" zine) and Anni Altshuler & Leah Mackin (of Holly Holly Hobby Hobby).
In 2015, The Soapbox signed a lease on a new space, eight blocks east of the original location. The new space offers more shelving, comfy seating, and a workspace for the cataloging team. The library was closed during the winter of 2015 as they relocated to the new location.
