No External Compulsion was a zine created by Criterion from Madison, Wisconsin.
First appearing in the late 1980's, five issues of this cut and paste, photo-copied zine appeared. Criterion was involved in the punk scene as a member of the experimental hardcore group Dogfight, but the content of his zine extended into personal concerns as well as music and politics. Issue number five also included his fiction story "Tupperfucking the Javaqueen", a work of erotica that, uniquely, remained gender neutral throughout. Book reviews and music reviews were also included in the zine.
The last issue of No External Compulsion appeared in the early 1990's. During the time he created these final issues, Criterion also did editorial and "shitworker" work for the Profane Existence newspaper/zine/record label. He also produced 2 issues of the zine Bleats'n'Squonx, a punk horn-lovers fanzine with reviews, interviews and tips from horn players in the underground music scene. The zine also included an enema article about keeping your own horn clean....
Criterion has since been running Broklyn Beats Records and ApplecoreMailorder out of Brooklyn, New York. He also records as Criterion.
