The BArea Fanzine Archive is a growing collection of fanzines maintained by Chris Garcia to be used by various members of science fiction fandom in the San Francisco Bay Area.
History
The Archive was started by Garcia in early 2005 with a batch of zines given to him by local fans who were just running out of space. Garcia started adding zines that would be sent to him in trade for his own zines, as well as older zines that he'd buy on-line in auctions or at various meetings and conventions. A large donation from Don Simpson added a number of zines from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s from notable fanzine fans like Bill Rotsler, John Purcell and Mike Glicksohn. By the end of 2006, there were some 200 different titles in the archive, including zines from as early as 1946. There are printed versions of many Webzines in the archive as well.
Events/Projects
The BArea Fanzine Archive provides fanzines to various West Coast Science Fiction Conventions, including Baycon and the 2007 Westercon. A cataloging project has begun, though it's not planned to be completed until August of 2007.
