Tom Civil is a Melbourne based zinester, stencil artist and designer who has a strong interest in ‘the management of public space through creating community and the role public art plays in this’.
Together with Lou Smith, Civil runs the small press publisher Breakdown Press.
As a designer he has worked on various independent publications including The Paper, an independent alternative newspaper and Scrapbook to Somewhere (2004). He is currently designing for Voiceworks magazine.
His stencil works have been widely exhibited, including venues such as Guerilla Gorilla (George White Gallery), Molotov (Early Gallery), Streetworks (Flinders lane Gallery) and as a featured artist in the 2004 Pssst Melbourne Stencil Art Festival.
He has also been involved in public art projects such as a collaborative legal wall, exhibited at Platform art boxes, Spencer Street Station, and as part of a group exhibition at Citylights.
Civil obtained a degree in Environmental Science from Newcastle University, NSW, in 1999.
