The Pornographic Flabbergasted Emus, a 'Rock "N" Roll novel from the world of zines' is by Wred Fright. It was first serialized as seven issues of a zine from June 2002 to September 2003, then posted online from 2003-2005, and published by the ULA Press, Underground LIterary Alliance in 2006. This trade paperback tells the story of a college rock band that, like most bands, is not successful. They play concerts, and even record, but eventually disband at the end of the semester. Unlike most novels, it is wrtten in present tense. Instead of "I looked around", he writes, "I look around." Also all chapters have an 'A' side and a 'B' side title, like a 45 rpm record, that describe the action to come. Plus each section of each chapter is labeled as one part of a song: intro, chorus, verse, coda, middle eight, etc. Perhaps the most notable character is Funnybear the wacky drummer who drinks too much and gets away with all kinds of immoral mischief. Other band members include Theodorable, George Jah, and Alexander Depot plus minor characters such as the 'Witch', a female roomate from hell that won't pay the rent and won't leave, John X the anarchist, Jugsy Charmichael the well-built, sexy roomate, and El Duce the martinet band manager.
