The Book of Harmonies

The Book of Harmonies is a 2004 zine created by Joe Galván. It was published while the author was a student at Texas Tech University and is the first in Galván's "meditative" zine series, and takes its inspiration from composer John Cage's piece Indeterminacy: New Aspect of Form in Electronic Music. Each story in the 16-page zine is written in a different font "as the reader sees fit", and the majority of the stories count as both "extended meditations on daily life" and performance pieces to be performed in front of an audience. 3 stories appeared in the Canadian zine Stationaery in 2004 and 2005. This was Galván's first foray into self-publishing.

Galván revised and expanded "Harmonies" in 2005 and again in 2007, adding 13 more stories, and included an introduction and set of performance instructions. Twenty copies were published by Galvan's in-house zine distro. In 2005 "Harmonies" was deposited in the Salt Lake City Zine Library. Two copies are available in the Multnomah County Library in Portland and a third copy resides in the Toronto zine library.
