I can easily document that writers like Jonathan Franzen, Tom Beller, Mary Gaitskill, Madison Smartt Bell, among others, as well as editors at publications like PARIS REVIEW and NEW YORK REVIEW OF BOOKS, were paying subscribers to New Philistine. I retain letters from most of these indiividuals; was engaged in an active debate about literature with them; a debate (often antagonistic) which continues to this day. I also had many prominent zeensters of the day as subscribers as well. NEW PHILISTINE is historically unique because it was like a lit-blog before there was such thing as blogs; the ONLY place by and large to find strong opinions contrary to those of the status quo lit-scene.
