Founded in 1966, the San Francisco Public Library's Little Maga/Zine Collection documents the alternative press of the San Francisco Bay Area. Little magazines and zines from almost every literary movement covering the 1940s onward may be found here. In addition to the core collection, ephemera is collected, and a reference collection on the history of little magazines and zines is being developed. The Little Maga/Zine Collection holds over 3,860 items (more than 1,000 titles) and is considered one of the most important collections of its kind in a public library.

Located in the Marjorie G. and Carl W. Stern Book Arts & Special Collections Center (http://sfpl.org/librarylocations/main/bookarts/bookarts.htm) on the sixth floor of the Main Library, the collection is open to the public Tuesday through Thursday: 10-6; Friday: 12 Noon-6; Saturday: 10–6; Sunday: 12 Noon–5. Closed Monday. No appointment is necessary.
