Otaku focused on the punk and hardcore scene in Miller's hometown of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It was first published in 1996, when the editor was sixteen.

After four issues, Jeff Miller ceased publishing Otaku and began Ghost Pine, which focused more on personal stories and was later published from Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
