Joel Olson (aka "joel" or "Joel Hippycore") is a native of Arizona. From 1987-1991, he was the publisher of Hippycore zine. He co-authored the seminal vegan cookbook Soy Not Oi! (still in print after 17 years), and put out records under the Hippycore label.

Olson relocated to go to graduate school at the University of Minnesota. From 1992-1993, Olson was an editor for Profane Existence. He left to become one of the editors of The Blast, an anarchist newspaper, copies of which were distributed for free in Minneapolis.

Olson later became an editor for Race Traitor: A Journal of the New Abolitionism. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Northern Arizona University.
