Grrrl Zines A Go-Go

Grrrl Zines A-Go-Go AKA GZAGG, is an all-women workshop group based in Southern California. Since 2002 they have been facilitating workshops in community venues and college campuses in their region. They focus on the empowerment of young women through the production of fanzines and self published works.

History

Formed in 2002, the instigator of the group was Elke Zobl, founder of the Grrrl Zine Network. As a visiting graduate student from Austria, Elke networked with local zinesters in San Diego. She hooked up with Margarat Nee, creator of Oya and Radical Pet, Glue Magazine’s Claudia Lucero, Kim Riot, creator of Grrrl Noire and Cyclette, and Wives Tale’s editrix Britton Neubacher. Claudia and Britton left the main collective to pursue their careers in 2004. Ari Perezdiez of HousewifeXcore Distro joined the collective in August of 2004 as a guest speaker and formally joined in December 2004. In July of 2005 Elke Zobl left the collective to move back to Austria. Currently, the local members are Margarat Nee and Kim Riot, although Ari Perezdiez continues to do zine activism in Portland, Oregon since 2007.

Projects

In 7 years Grrrl Zines A-Go-Go has put on over 20 workshops, working with such organizations as the Hillcrest LGBT Centre, San Ysidro Public Libarary, SDSU, Cal Poly SLO, Cal state San Marcos, Hillcrest Book Faire, Portland Zine Symposium, Mobilivre-Bookmobile, the S/he Collective, and San Diego Indymedia.

Grrrl Zines A-Go-Go have facilitated non-zine making workshops such as Zines 101, History of Riot Grrrl, and Building Community Action Through Zines.

GZAGG has published as a collective three zines, "Let's DIY I: Tip and Tricks on Zine Making Workshops", "Let's DIY II: Taking Zine-Making to the Community, and "Zine Capsule: Zine Collecting for the Future".
