As a musician, he is often lumped into the New Weird America folk music scene. He has released a number of recordings on his own, as well as with the US labels Bad Drone Media, DeathBombArc, Below-PDX, Native, Kin, and Loud + Clear Records as well as the UK labels Try Harder and Drowned In Sound.
His self-released 60-page novella zine, Seasons Loving Nothing, was published in October of 2007 and is now in its third printing. Previously-published perzines include the monthlies The Word, which was released from 1996 till 1998, followed by Actress, published between 1998 and 2000, We Are All Animals Now published in 2004, and a series of limited-release chapbooks. He is also a part of the Microcosm Publishing collective, heading up the Portland division.
Gnade also recently appeared as "the Silent Kid" in the indie film Loren Cass alongside Jacob Reynolds, star of Gummo, Keith Morris of the bands Circle Jerks and Black Flag, and Blag Dahlia of the Dwarves.
DutchMoney Books will release a book version of stories surrounding his albums' characters. Released in April 2008, it will be called Hymn California.
